When I first arrived in Australia, I really struggled with homesickness. Being so far from home, missing my family, the food, traditions, and everything familiar, was tough.
But things started to turn around when I discovered the cultural society groups at my uni. Joining the group from my home country gave me a place to connect with people who actually understood what I was going through.
We spoke in our native language (no more brain-draining translations, lol), ate traditional food, and celebrated cultural events together, which made me feel more at home. I also found out about other cultural societies on campus, offering the same kind of support to students from all over the world.
The group didn’t just help me beat homesickness; it also helped me make lasting friendships and find a real sense of community here. It honestly felt like I wasn’t alone in this whole experience.
If you’re an international student dealing with homesickness, I really recommend joining your cultural society group at uni. I’ve also heard there are cultural groups outside of uni that you can join (feel free to correct me if I’m wrong). Either way, being part of these groups can help you feel more connected and supported while adjusting to life in a new place.
If anyone else has gone through something similar, let me know how you managed it—I’m curious to hear your experiences!
