As someone about to move abroad, I’ve been really concerned about jet lag, especially since there will be a lot to do when I arrive, like settling in. I did some research on how to prevent or treat jet lag, and I’d like to share it with everyone.

  1. Before leaving:
    • Make sure to get enough sleep to prevent sleep debt.
  2. During the flight:
    • Limit or avoid caffeine.
    • Drink lots of water.
    • Nap whenever you’re sleepy (try to plan your naps according to your destination’s time zone).
    • Eat small, light meals regularly.
    • Walk around the airplane cabin whenever possible.
    • Maximise comfort with loose clothes, a neck pillow, eyeplugs, or an eye mask.
  3. After arriving:
    • Expose yourself to daylight as much as possible.
    • Drink caffeinated drinks in moderation during the daytime.
    • Avoid caffeine in the few hours leading up to bedtime.

If I missed anything, feel free to add it below.

Adding onto what @maryam mentioned, I’ve found that moderate exercising also helps fight off jet lag. Even a walk outside in the fresh air can make a huge difference. Refrain from extensive exercise though, that would make it harder for you to fall asleep.
