As someone about to move abroad, I’ve been really concerned about jet lag, especially since there will be a lot to do when I arrive, like settling in. I did some research on how to prevent or treat jet lag, and I’d like to share it with everyone.
- Before leaving:
- Make sure to get enough sleep to prevent sleep debt.
- During the flight:
- Limit or avoid caffeine.
- Drink lots of water.
- Nap whenever you’re sleepy (try to plan your naps according to your destination’s time zone).
- Eat small, light meals regularly.
- Walk around the airplane cabin whenever possible.
- Maximise comfort with loose clothes, a neck pillow, eyeplugs, or an eye mask.
- After arriving:
- Expose yourself to daylight as much as possible.
- Drink caffeinated drinks in moderation during the daytime.
- Avoid caffeine in the few hours leading up to bedtime.
